January 2006 sees the launch of the World Handcycling
Federation (WHF)
who will work closely with the International Paralympic
Committee (IPC) and
the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) to make the
sport a truly global entity.
The aims of the WHF are to:
- direct, develop, control and regulate Handcycling
worldwide
- to promote Handcycling worldwide
- to organise global Handcycling events and the WHF
World Cup series
- to promote sportsmanship and fair play
- to represent Handcycling and defend its interests at
all national and
international authorities
One of the key WHF Founding Principles is to integrate
able-bodied with
disabled athletes for races, one of the few sports that
can be said to be fully
integrated.
The WHF will also oversee innovation through:
- equipment modifications and technologies
- generation of new events
- development & refinement of rules and classification

The WHF World Cup series is to be the cornerstone of the
development of the
sport worldwide. A series of top high profile races
around the world where the
top International riders attain World Ranking Points.
The 2006 WHF World Cup series will be:
5-20 Mar Wild West Handcycling Tour Australia
12 Mar Cape Argus RSA
27-30 May Rocky Mtn Omnium USA
3 Sep Tour of Britain Final Stage London UK
30 Sep Namur Belgium
The development of Handcycling in continents such as
Africa and Asia,
where the sport is very much in its infancy, will be a
key driver in the WHF
Development Plan currently being worked on.
